Powerball is the super lottery from the States that was once known as ‘Lotto America’, it was launched in 1988 and is one of the longest running lottery games available in America. The lottery went through the rebranding process in 1992 to become Powerball lottery, and there are currently 43 states, along with Washington D.C and the US Virgin Islands that all participate in the Powerball. These participating states and jurisdictions all form the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) which is a non-profit organisation that runs and oversees this American lottery.
There were investigations made in 2005 into the possibility of a fraud being carried out when 110 players became second place winners. This highly unusual occurrence prompted allegations of fraud which were ultimately dropped after investigations were carried out and it was revealed that in fact those who had been lucky enough to identify the first five numbers correctly and win $100,000 had in fact all used numbers provided by a fortune cookie. Wonton Food Inc., in Long Island City, New York were cleared of any involvement after it was revealed that although the fortune cookies with the winning numbers had come from them that no actual employees of Wonton Food actually purchased tickets with the winning numbers.
To play the Powerball select five white numbers, which are the main numbers from a selection of 1 – 59, then one red number, known as the Powerball, from a choice of 1 – 35. Altogether there are nine prizes available to win in the Powerball all of which, except the jackpot, are fixed amounts. The Powerball jackpots start at a minimum of $40 million and increase every time there is no top prize winner. This rollover facility allows the top prize to reach impressive amounts, and the largest amount ever won in this game was in May 2013, when one ticket won a massive $590.5 million.

For an additional fee the Power Play can be used in every prize tier, bar the jackpot and players can see their winnings either doubled or even tripled if they choose to use the Power Play. For example, the second tier prize in the Powerball is a fixed $1 million, however if players select the Power Play and match it when it is drawn from a choice of 2 – 5 they will win an impressive $2 million.
